Meet Kara Cross
Hi, I'm a sci-fi romantasy author. While working in psychology and neuroscience research in my hometown of San Diego, CA, I wrote The Dark Mother. When I'm not writing about getting lost in space and discovering new planets, I'm taking care of my twins, finding serenity in nature, dancing hula, or binge-watching my next favorite book or tv series.

Meet L.K. Cross
Origins
I've loved storytelling from a young age. I watched a lot of Star Trek as a little girl, so this is probably where the sci-fi loving began. The things that make most space shows tick aren't only the cool futuristic sciencey stuff--it's the human (and alien!) connections. The relationships. So, how did the space explorer feel after having to leave behind someone she fell inlove with on planet X?!
Being a hopeful romantic, it only came naturally to talk about romantic tensions of my characters. You know, the first peice of writing that made me cry was Romeo and Juliet, so that tells you something about me. And yes, I do write some spicey scenes. Whenever I watch a show that has zero love connections, that's the element I always want to read or see!

World-builder
Every place I've visited has given me deep inspiration for world-building. The vast differences in cultures, foods, interactions, and environment in every place makes each a unique world. Doing a deep dive into cultural idiosyncrasies helps me to turn characters into people, and landscapes into a place you can really step into.
A few places that have greatly influenced my world-building capabilities are the Philippines (part of my lineage), Bali, Ireland, Scotland, and Hawai'i, where I call home. And growing up in San Diego, California certainly had a great impact on building oceanic landscapes.
Beyond the Page
I worked at UCSD in psychology and neuroimaging for six years. Most of the writing I did in the labs were technical papers and lotsss of emails! I'd planned on getting a PhD at the time, but the universe had other plans. All to say, the cool things I learned about the human brain, imaging tech, and working in psych laboratories are all seen in my writing! I am curious about human behavior, especially abnormal behavior and strange tendencies. Philosophical views of human identity are questioned in The Dark Mother.
That's my brain on the right!
